“Adventures in Permaculture”


Adventures in Permaculture leafletGlobal and Local Permaculture – What is the next big step for Permaculture’s earth-wide network? Permaculture is already more than 35 years old. Originally a design system for ‘tree-changers’, it is now a global movement that designs and promotes sustainability in housing, business, farms and local food systems. Is it effective? Is it spread too thin? Does the name permaculture matter? What does the next generation of permaculture bring? What is your role?

Leading up to the Australasian Permaculture Conference (Tasmania, March 2015) and the next global conference (London Sept 2015) Ian Lillington, part of an international team facilitating debate about these questions, will present a talk in conjunction with the film about his recent trip to the British Permaculture conference in London.






“Gardening With Soul” (2013) – love, faith and compost!

This wonderful film is a year’s seasons in the New Zealand gardening life of 90-year-old Sister Loyola. It is an award winning documentary by Jess Feast that will surely make you smile!

“Right to Land and Seed: Food Sovereignty in times of Climate Change” (Jurgen Kraus and Heidi Thiele, 2014)

Bangladesh is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change and this documentary includes voices of peasants, landless workers, activists of South Asian grassroots movements, NGOs, politicians and scientists.

This thought provoking documentary will be screened on Sunday, 28 September at 4pm.

Chris Walsh is a social entrepreneur, sustainability champion and co-founder of the Kindling Trust, where his work has included establishing the Feeding Manchester Network, the Greater Manchester Land ArmyManchester Veg People and FarmStart. The Kindling Trust focuses on the principles of sustainable production, sustainable living and sustainable activism.

Locals joined him for a seasonal meal and conversation about some of his experiences and insights around creating strong local food systems that bring all stakeholders together and how this can be applied in our local area.


Sharon Kittson: Luckwood Organics & Box System

The Macedon Ranges has never been so well fed! Based in Kyneton, Sharon Kittson has established Luckwood Organics, a vegie box business which support local organic growers.Locals heard about how Kyneton’s appetite for organic local food has grown, and ways she has helped to feed it.




Slow Food and Transition Towns

Slow Food flagHow do small towns and cities in the UK secure their local food supplies and support independent operators?  What can we learn in relation to Central Victoria’s food supply?

Local food advocates John Reid (Red Beards Bakery) and Ian Lillington(Permaculture Australia) shared their insights and reflections from recent tours of Italy and the UK including the Slow Food Conference, Transition Towns and local food movements.




Into the Future

MAFG blossomLucy Young, Tim Sproal, Heather Barrett & Katie Finlay, some of Castlemaine’s local foodleaders, joined us for a walk through the blossoming orchard, sharing their dreams for Castlemaine’s local food system in five years time and how we can make it happen. A delicious seasonal long table lunch was shared in the orchard.







Daylesford Community Gardeners

Patrick JonesPatrick Jones shared with us some of the dynamic and  creative ways his community is transitioning to a carbon responsiblefood system; including the creation of five different community gardens in Daylesford, food foragers tours and more.
