Carpentry for Beginners

August 11 @ 9:30 am - 3:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 9:30 am on Tuesday, repeating until 8 September, 2020

Creating with timber is a delightful activity with a deep history in many parts of the world. Working with incredible trees, we are able to produce items of both beauty and function from tiny hand-carved spoons to multi-storey buildings.

In this 6-day practical course you will learn to use traditional hand tools and power tools and build your own small timber bookcase to take home!

We will cover the basic principles of carpentry in a fun and relaxed environment – a special invitation goes out to those who may have encountered obstacles to conventional trade-based training – and you will develop foundational skills applicable across a wide range of carpentry and woodworking settings.

What we will cover:

  • Important principles of carpentry and furniture making.
  • Using traditional hand tools and power tools.
  • Designing and planning your project.
  • Selecting timbers.
  • Introduction to joinery techniques.
  • Types of fastenings and their applications.
  • Natural finishing methods.
  • Ethical resourcing.
  • Safe workshop practice.
  • Pathways to further training in Carpentry and Natural Building.

Get equipped to tackle your own projects at home and in the garden! Take the first steps toward a career in ethical carpentry or furniture making!

Come and see what building’s all about!
