Mount Alexander Seniors Festival

Planning for the 2020 Mount Alexander Senior’s Festival was off to an early flying start in February 2020, to build upon the success and learning opportunities of our 2019 festival. Unfortunately, as with most things, this momentum was stalled by the arrival of Covid-19.

In late August 2020, the SFW Steering Committee reconvened via Zoom, a virtual meeting space which was filled with both ideas and enthusiasm to work with the State Festival’s concept of “Senior’s Festival – Reimagined”, by taking all activities online. With little time to mobilise, action is being taken to organise local and online events for seniors in Mount Alexander, such as an art exhibition featuring works by local seniors. Although a challenging time, it’s certainly inspiring to witness the “we can do this!” attitude to technology and pandemic adversity of our local seniors.

The 2020 Mount Alexander Senior’s Festival Week will certainly be one like no other before, but one that will develop new and different ways that had not been fully explored before. We look forward to celebrating Senior’s Festival Week this year, join us online!

The annual Mount Alexander Senior’s Festival is fun and uplifting celebration of senior members of our community. The festival continues to grow over time with more than 30 separate events were held right around the shire including at Newstead, Harcourt, Chewton, Campbells Creek, Metcalfe and Castlemaine.

The 2018 festival saw the return of a public opening ceremony, held on the steps of the Castlemaine Market Building. Around 400 locals of all ages enjoyed entertainment by the Bendigo Chinese Lions, Ukule-ladies and local singing group the Blenders. Following the opening an expo featuring local service providers, organisations and groups for seniors, which saw 1,000 visitors through the Market Building over two days.

With the festival winning the 2018 Community Event of the Year, the steering committee of volunteers, who give their time and expertise, are aiming to make 2019 even better!  We thank all of those involved, without who, the festival would not be possible.
